Brick slips

Hi I am wanting to brick slip my wall it has recently been sound proofed and plastered and I’ve read online I can’t do this on plastered wall, as it is too smooth and the brick slips will fall off. I’m due to have it painted on Wednesday and need to ask if I should be asking my painter to just mist coat, leave it plastered or paint it fully. Also how much would it be to installed brick slips on a wall that is 165x91 inches? Thanks

Certainly! Let’s discuss brick slips and their installation in simple terms.

What Are Brick Slips?
Brick slips are thin slices of real brick or brick-like material. They give the appearance of a traditional brick wall without the bulk.
People use brick slips for interior or exterior walls to achieve a rustic or industrial look.

Applying Brick Slips to a Plastered Wall:
You’re right that applying brick slips directly to a smooth plastered wall can be tricky.
Here’s what you can do:
Option 1 (Recommended): Apply a cement-based adhesive directly to the plastered wall. This adhesive provides a rough surface for the brick slips to grip onto.
Option 2: Use a wire mesh or a textured backing board. Attach it to the plastered wall, and then apply the brick slips to the mesh or board.
Option 3: Remove the plaster entirely and expose the underlying brickwork. Then apply the brick slips directly to the bricks.

Painting Over Brick Slips:
If you plan to paint the brick slips, follow these steps:
Step 1: Mist coat the brick slips. A mist coat is a diluted layer of emulsion paint (about 50% water and 50% paint). It helps the surface absorb subsequent layers of paint.
Step 2: Once the mist coat is dry, apply your desired paint color over the brick slips.
Step 3: Seal the painted brick slips with a clear varnish or sealer to protect the finish.

Cost of Installing Brick Slips:
The cost depends on various factors:
Material: Real brick slips tend to be more expensive than brick-like veneers.
Labor: Hiring a professional installer will add to the cost.
Size of Wall: Your wall measures 165x91 inches (approximately 13.75x7.58 feet). Calculate the total square footage to estimate the number of brick slips needed.

Type of Brick Slips: Prices vary based on the type and quality of brick slips you choose.
Remember to consult with your painter and consider professional installation if you’re unsure.
